Cut costs and emissions with lube oil reuse

ShipCore’s Lube Oil Reuse System (LRS) is a breakthrough innovation in the shipping industry, designed to reuse oil drained from scavenge air drains and stuffing boxes. The system has already delivered outstanding results, enabling shipping companies to reduce cylinder oil OPEX by up to 60%.

By reclaiming and purifying drained lube oil, the LRS significantly reduces the need to purchase new oil and minimizes waste generation. This not only drives substantial cost savings but also reduces environmental impact and improves the overall efficiency of your engine operations.

Key benefits

  • Lower costs: Reduce cylinder oil OPEX by up to 60%
  • Gain an advantage: Protect your operations from volatile oil prices and unpredictable supply costs
  • Reduce CO2 emissions: A more sustainable, energy-efficient solution
  • Proven and documented: Thoroughly tested and verified through extended operational experience
  • Extend engine life: Improved detergency and optimized lubrication reduce wear

No more "total loss of marine lube oil"

Normally, used marine lube oil is considered total loss oil, used once and then discarded. With ShipCore's LRS, however, the drained oil from scavenge air drains and stuffing boxes can now be reclaimed, purified, and reused — transforming what was once treated as waste into a valuable resource.

How the LRS works:

  • Initial Cleaning
The drained oil first passes through high-efficiency centrifugal filters that remove solids and particles with exceptional accuracy. Depending on engine size and fuel type, 2–4 centrifugal filters operate in parallel. If water content exceeds the set threshold, dehumidification is initiated at this stage to secure stable oil quality.
  • Final Purification
After the initial cleaning, the oil is further processed using a fine filtration stage with CJC filters working alongside the centrifugal setup. This ensures maximum cleanliness and safety. Operational data shows minimal contamination at this point, as most impurities are already removed in the first stage.
  • Quality Control & Ready for Reuse
Before storage, the oil undergoes a final quality control check to ensure it meets the required cleanliness and performance specifications. If needed, a separate re-additivation step can be applied before the oil is returned to the cylinder lubrication system. This process delivers high-quality reclaimed oil with proven performance in real-life operations.

Lube Oil Reuse System (LRS)

ShipCore’s Lube Oil Reuse System (LRS) revolutionizes the handling and lifetime of lubrication oil for maritime 2-stroke engines.

Working together with the ADCS and SCU, the LRS reuses lubrication oil to be reintroduced into the engine. This drastically lowers the total cost of lubrication oil used to operate the engine and lowers emissions from fossil fuels by reusing rather than paying to dispose of excess oil.

With ShipCore’s LRS, improved sustainability also means an improved ship economy.

Sludge Collecting Unit (SCU)

ShipCore’s Sludge Collecting Unit (SCU) removes the need for manual cleaning of scavenge air drain tanks and is central to facilitating the repurpose of oil drained from the engine to be reintroduced as reuse cylinder lubrication oil in our Lube Oil Reuse System (LRS).

With the SCU, engine crews save a significant amount of man hours on cleaning duties, improving working conditions by reducing the exposure to hazardous substances.

Automatic Drain Cleaning System (ADCS)

ShipCore’s Automatic Drain Cleaning System (ADCS) reduces sludge accumulation in 2-stroke engines through continuous cleaning of scavenge air drains.

The solution is highly durable and reduces the total amount of cylinder lubrication oil needed as well as the total fuel consumption of the ship.

Add to this that it improves the working conditions and work safety of the engine crew significantly, while lowering their man-hours spent on cleaning duties.

High performance and durability

The Lube Oil Reuse System is built for durability, designed with well-known and reliable components such as high-efficiency centrifugal filters, an automatic fine inlet filter and a high-performance fine filter for final quality assurance.

After filtration, the processed oil is sent to the storage tank, ready for re-additivation and further use.

An industry approved solution

Major cylinder oil manufacturers and filtration companies have verified that the reconditioned oil from the LRS offers equal or better cylinder lubrication properties than new standard off-the-shelf cylinder oil, ensuring reliable engine protection.

This can be achieved because the level of residual detergency additives combined with a high-additive package to reach the desired BN level gives the oil higher detergency properties. A fact that has been proven in service.

Why choose the LRS?

  • Significant savings on cylinder lube oil OPEX
  • Significant reductions in CO2 emissions from well-to-wake
  • Improved engine condition
  • Facilitate systems for custom cylinder oil BN adjustment
